Litter Alert

Martin wrote: "I saw a load of cable ties thrown over the wall down at the bridge at Christ the King, most likley from election posters that were taken down. the whole place was strewn with rubbish. I saw it while I was fishing there."

Meanwhile on the jobs front ...

1. On April 1st I was delighted to announce that from information to hand, a company was interested in 'taking up residence' in the former Green Isle factory in Greatmeadow. That was early days. I understand that shortly an announcement may be made that this same company will set about opening the factory as a manufacturing plant in the food industry.
2. So far it has not been reported ... Vention, a worldwide leader in medical device design now employs upwards of 150 people in its plant in Abbeytown, Boyle. Vention Medical has a strong global presence, with facilities throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and Ireland serving growing customer needs.

Irish Teens on cocaine

Irish teens are in one of the top spots of the league table of cocaine use in the EU, new research has identified. Schoolchildren aged between 15 and 16 are among the most regular users of the lethal drug, the survey has found. A total of 3pc of Irish teens in that category said that they have tried cocaine.

Boyle Tidy Towns

Jackie Valentine wrote: We believe that judges for the Tidy Towns competition will visit Boyle some time this week. We are organising a town clean up for Thursday 5th June. We will meet on the Crescent at 7pm. It would be great to have a big turn out so if you can spare an hour join us.

The new Roadsigns and Visitors Guide

Thankfully we have traders and citizens who will continue to operate and observe only the highest standards.
Sadly, I judge negatively on both the new Signs on approach roads to Boyle and the new Visitors Guide. Terms like "A lowering of standards" and "Sins of Omission" come to mind. I am judging from my life years in Graphic Design and Signmaking.
In my opinion the signs are garish, tatty and lack any 'class' befitting our beloved hometown. I wonder did Roscommon Planning Office actually approve the design and grant permission for erecting them where they are now.
The Visitors Brochure is heavily grey in colour and contains far too many errors and omissions to be a valid guide for Boyle. It is noteworthy that the names of both designer and printer are nowhere to be seen on the document, and I have no idea who was asked to quote for these jobs.
If others are happy, then I am happy for them. Thankfully we have traders, crafts/creative people and citizens who will continue to operate without grant aid or state assistance and observe only the highest standards ... ineluctably.

Roscommon County Youth Concert - last Saturday

P5310081

Last Saturday's concert in the Church of Ireland, Green Street was a delight. I had not had the pleasure of being present for this young orchestra for quite a while. In the meantime the RCYO now sounds just as good as any I have heard performing live. Their programme covered a wide range of familiar popular music and film theme pieces. Closing my eyes as I listened made me wonder 'How can they be this good?' 'Plaudits to the young musicians, tutors and conductors' 'Plaudits as well to the Arts Council, Roscommon Co Council and everyone involved'. I look forward to hearing the RCYO many times in the future.
