Update 29th January

Main Street, onwards and upwards...

P1290025

Traders on Main Street tell me that the One Way System greatly impeded development of this very important Boyle shopping street. Several shops closed, though some of our excellent traders remained in situ. Over the past few months there is a palpable return-to-former-glory. Today marked another rung of the ladder upwards for the street when Patricia's Home Bakes located to a space within the upwardly mobile Boyle Country Meats.
• Boyle Country Meats is one of our jewels with its fabulous meat displays, instore oven-ready meals, everyday convenience store items, and now Patricia Feeney's Home Bakes.

Sinead O'Connor not joining Sinn Féin

Singer Sinead O'Connor has decided not to join Sinn Féin following a meeting with party officials. The Wicklow-based performer had previously declared her intentions to become a party member last month and said she wanted the entire Sinn Féin leadership to step down and wanted to reframe what it means to be a republican. "They persuaded me that I'd be bored s***less, pretty much waiting for them to get into government before being able to help generate any national discussion on the issue of ending partition," Ms O'Connor said.

Roscommon Co. Councillors - library amalgamation

Roscommon Co. Councillors are to inform Minister Alan Kelly of opposition to proposed amalgamation of library services. The ”Opportunities for All’ plan from the Department of the Environment and Local Government could see Sligo, Leitrim, and Roscommon libraries combine under one authority. Cllrs feel the plan would only mean a downgrading and ultimately loss of branches.

Bank of Ireland Heritage Meeting

DSC01999Niall Flanagan, Gerry Whelehan and Michael Savage

Bank of Ireland and a committee of volunteers from the Boyle are working on an initiative which aims to promote a BOI-funded business momentum in our locality.
• A large audience attended last night's public meeting in King House. Boyle branch manager Gerry Whelehan outlined progress so far in organing a Business / Club / Community Expo in Boyle planned for the last weekend in February.
• As MC, Gerry issued an invitation for those interested to join the current committee of six locals organising the event.
• Following short videos taken during similar events in Kells, Rathdowney and Granard, presenters Michael Savage and Niall Flanagan (area manager Bank of Ireland) gave their experiences in organising events like this and outlined the legacy benefits to each of the towns.
• A lengthy Q&A session followed, referring frequently to an excellent Expo held in the Sports Complex three years ago. Here is an album of photos from Boyle TM Extravaganza 2011 ...

Bad weather on the way

Weather forecasters are advising us to wrap up warm because bitterly cold conditions are set to blast Ireland for the rest of the week. While we are not going to get anything like the current snowstorm now crippling seven USA States, temperatures could plunge as low as -4C later this week.
• Enjoy today though as temperatures are predicted to reach a high of 9C.

Congratulations to Seth Meredith

Seth Meredith won the Junior captains prize in Aug 2014 and was also awarded best young boy golfer. He is the only junior from Boyle Golf to have been selected to attend the GUI (Golfing Union of Ireland ) where he will be coached by professional golf trainers.

Litter on Maple Drive

A viewer wrote: "I take good care in keeping our area as litter free as possible, and much pride in flower patches outside my house. Other Maple Drive residents do likewise. We have noticed in recent weeks that people have started to dump wine bottles and sauce bottles in the flower patches. Would you please ask these litter louts to stop this ASAP and keep Boyle tidy."

Cork actor Gavin O'Connor has responded to criticism of his portrayal of late former Justice Minister Sean Doherty in RTE drama 'Charlie'.
Last week Sean Doherty's daughter Councillor Rachel Doherty slammed the series, saying she was frustrated by the portrayal of her father as a "villain" and a "cartoon figure". I knew the late Sean Doherty very well. He was a hugely charismatic, influential and capable man that you meet just once in a generation. I and agree that there is substance in Rachel's comments.

It also improves postural problems, helps prevent injury, enhances functional fitness, improves balance, coordination and circulation, heightens body awareness and is low impact on the joints. Pilates as a method of exercise focuses on working the muscles from the inside out rather than the outside in therefore developing proper movement patterns which reduce the likelihood of injury.

House Break-in update

There are indications now that the stolen car may have been found in the Castlerea area!
A house was broken into at Silveroe on the Frenchpark Road on Monday night. A light blue/silver Volkswagen Passat, reg number 00 DL 2758 and some money were stolen. If you noticed activity in the area between 2am and 4am please call Boyle Gardai on 071 966 2030.
I have been informed that an attempt was made to enter another house closeby on the same night and a car at this house was vandalised.

Thank You from Boyle TM

Boyle Town and More thanked everyone in Mattimoe's prior to the Chamber Draw for all their help with the Christmas Lights and all who assisted in their fundraising efforts during the year (Good Friday Quiz and Christmas Mega Draw).
• While the purchase of the lights for the town cost €25,000, the Christmas draw raised €9,600 and last year’s Good Friday ‘Bright Sparks Quiz’ raised €3,000 - so they are half way there with the loan in year one! Boyle TM especially thanked all the 50 sponsors who donated prizes to the Draw, the 100 business’ who sold numerous cards and the 30 plus individuals who took cards to sell to their families and friends and last but not least the thousands who bought lines to support fundraising for the lights.
• The gathering took place prior to the Boyle Chamber Lotto and sponsors and supporters were there as was many of the 30 volunteers in the Community who did a super job on erecting the lights. All enjoyed their night, before embarking on the arduous task of taking down the bright lights of Boyle!
• Mark your Calendars for Friday 3rd April – The Good Friday Bright Sparks Quiz!

There is always space on realboyle for photos of our local attractions. The photo above is a lightly stylised image of our 'Gaelic Chieftain' on the N4.
• History: The Battle of Curlew Pass was fought on the 15th of August 1599, during the campaign of the Earl of Essex in the Nine Years' War, between an English force under Sir Conyers Clifford and a rebel Irish force led by Hugh Roe O'Donnell. The English forces were ambushed and routed while marching through a pass in the Curlew Mountains, near the town of Boyle. The English forces suffered heavy casualties, reputedly 500 were killed. Losses by allied Irish forces were not recorded but were probably minimal
• Maurice Harron's metal sculpture 'Gaelic Chieftain' statue overlooks the battlefield today. Derry man Maurice Harron lived in the Boyle area some years ago and commuted to Roscommon Convent where he was employed as an Art Teacher.
