2016: Bank of Ireland has announced
the return of its Enterprise Town initiative to Boyle on Friday 1st April.
Taking place in the Boyle Sport Complex from 4pm-8.30pm on Friday the event
features a Business, Community and Sports Expo as well as plenty of family
friendly activity throughout the day. The Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town event
has been organised by the Bank in partnership with the local community in Boyle. The initiative aims to promote enterprise and drive business
momentum for local businesses and the wider sports and social community in the
locality by connecting residents with all the town has to offer. Events are
free to attend and are open to both customers and non-customers of Bank of
Ireland.
Over the course of the day exhibitors
will display a wide variety of products and services. The event will also include talks from, soccer
legend and football pundit, John Giles at what is sure to be an exciting
event!
With
something for everyone, a community and sports exhibition will take place and
feature local GAA stars, a fashion show, food demonstrations, and IPad
giveaways. An array of family friendly entertainment will be provided on the
day provided by local performers.
Speaking
about the return of Enterprise Town, local Bank of Ireland Branch Manager Gerry
Whelehan commented; “Following the great success of last year’s event, we
are thrilled to be holding another event this year. The local residents have
once again embraced this initiative wholeheartedly and working together, we
have organised a very exciting programme of activity.
“The
event will be free to attend and is open to all. It is a fantastic opportunity
for the community to see the level of enterprise here in Boyle. I would
encourage local businesses and the wider community to engage with this
initiative and enjoy the exciting programme of activities scheduled for Friday
1st April.
We
have some great speakers lined up for the day including soccer legend and football pundit, John Giles, I for
one am really looking forward to hearing him speak.

Statement by Denis Naughten on meetings with An Taoiseach & Deputy Martin
Earlier today I had frank discussions with An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, and leader of the opposition Micheal Martin TD on the formation of a new Government.
In the course of both meetings I made it clear that I am more than willing to play my role in assisting in the formation of a stable Government which would be in a position to implement an agreed programme.
I pointed out that a pre-condition to participating in any Government is a fundamental reform of the way in which Dáil Eireann operates, which currently is a 19th Century model dealing with the 21st Century problems.
If anything we have seen reform in reverse over the term of the last Dáil and the public will no longer tolerate the system whereby the "gang of 4", namely the Economic Management Council (EMC), makes the decisions for all the citizens of this country, which are then rubber stamped by the Cabinet and rammed through a Dáil that spends much of its time bickering.
With that in mind I presented both leaders with a set of 10 changes to the current rules of Dáil Eireann (Standing Orders) which would help to empower individual members of the Dáil whether they are in a party or outside one. These changes would incentivise and reward TDs who want to make a positive contribution to the parliamentary process rather than those who continually highlight problems but rarely provide constructive solutions.
A number of independent members of Dáil Eireann support these proposals, which have been circulated to all members currently outside a recognised Dáil grouping (see attached).
Finally, I made it clear to both leaders that many independent members of Dáil Eireann are hungry for change, not necessarily for power, and that we are more than willing to work with any potential government in a spirit of co-operation to secure the inclusion of practical and implementable measures in a Programme for Government which is focused on delivering for provincial and rural Ireland.
Empowerment of members of Dáil Éireann
1. Reduce threshold for formation of a group from 7 to any group of 5 members who wish to work together, and who express this in writing to the Ceann Comhairle.
2. Allow the Dáil to set the agenda – remove Taoiseach’s prerogative on order of business. Replace current whips with Business committees representative of all members with chair to rotate on six monthly basis, between all groups.
3. Ban motions on the order of business prefaced with “notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders” ensuring business is conducted within Standing orders.
4. Allow free votes at Oireachtas Committees including on legislation.
5. Rotate the Leas Cheann Comhairligh on an annual basis – to ensure all members are represented.
6. Increase the number of opportunities for Private members time on weekly basis and this time should not be confined to recognised groups or parties. ( may be the case that it would require 3 signatures as is the case in the Seanad for a private members Bill)
7. Replace Topical Issues with 6 commencement motions at the start of the day’s business (similar to Seanad Éireann)
8. Provide full legislative drafting service to all TDs.
9. Allow a member to introduce amendments creating a charge upon the State, by moving the requirement of the sanctioning money message by the Government under Article 17. 2 of the Constitution, from before committee stage to before 5th stage. This allows these amendments to be debated in Dáil, instead of being rules out of order.
10. In addition the catch all interpretation where any amendment which has the potential to create a charge is disallowed should be relaxed and should only come into play if the actual charge is met under the Bill

Anyway, both questions were asked and I answered 'yes' without hesitation "a local entity acquired an edge of town property, and 'big' news will be announced soon regarding one of our schools. "Tell me more, tell me more" my inquisitor pleaded. "No, no" I replied, "I have a fertile imagination and you shouldn't believe everything you hear and If I heard lies, I'm telling you lies!".

Rates for Businesses
Most businesses have recently received correspondence from the Valuation Office in relation to the proposed rates revaluation in County Roscommon. Boyle Chamber of Commerce last week attended a meeting of Roscommon County Council addressed by Mr. Patrick Conroy from the Valuation Office in relation to this.

Toughest Muckers - next Sunday
Event details and schedule: Registration/waiver signing begins at 10am on Sunday 28th February with the first wave of 100 setting off at 12 and every fifteen minutes thereafter. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your time as you need to sign waiver and get warmed up by are fitness team. There is ample parking run by the forest park. Wear training gear for the challenge (runners will get mucky) but remember to bring a change of clothes to enjoy the festivities afterwards, free hot showers, free beer and free food are for everybody competing (tickets given on the day)

Roscommon Herald to vacate offices

It is sad to be informed that later this year, the Roscommon Herald 'one of Boyle's longest established businesses' will vacate offices on St. Patrick Street.
While a schoolboy I was employed there by the late Miceál O'Callaghan, working for a couple of hours daily before teatime as a trainee proof reader.
For many, 'The Herald' is a must-read, and all will look forward to a continuation by its management and staff from whatever location its owners decide on.

Camogie meeting in Dalys 24th Wednesday, 8:30pm.
Camogie is due to return in April. We will run with another 4 weeks indoor before moving outside for the remainder of the season. If you can give some time to this startup club in any capacity, it would be greatly appreciated. We need support in all areas between administration, officers posts & coaches/leaders. The more volunteers we have the easier it is for all volunteers and the better the chances of the club to succeed.
• We previously ran with u8's only. We have now registered with the county board that Boyle will have both u8 & u10's. Some of our players have already moved into this age bracket and we will also need new members. We'll be looking for children aged between 6 & 10 ( born from 2006 - 2009/10). Again - we need support from more parents in order to be able to run with this.
• If you can offer any help or time I would greatly appreciate if you could attend this meeting to assess the future of the club. (Please bear in mind that you do not need Hurling/Camogie skills in order to coach or be a leader for this age group.) I hope to see you all there.

Boyle Celtic - Soccer Sisters Camp
This Easter Boyle Celtic FC will host the FAI Soccer Sisters Camp. The camp is for girls of 7-12 years of age. It will take place at Boyle Celtic FC on the Monday and Tuesday 21st and 22nd March from 10am-2pm. The cost is 20 euros which includes a specially designed girl's jersey. This is an ideal opportunity to introduce your daughter to the game or to help them to develop their skills further. Boyle Celtic have recently introduced U14 and U16 teams along with their U9 academy so it is hoped that initiatives such as the Soccer Sisters Camp can help the girls game to grow and prosper in the region.

Event details and schedule: Registration/waiver signing, 10am on Sunday 28th February with the first wave of 100 setting off at 12 and every fifteen minutes thereafter. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your time as you need to sign waiver and get warmed up by are fitness team. There is ample parking. Wear training gear for the challenge (runners will get mucky) but remember to bring a change of clothes to enjoy the festivities afterwards, free hot showers, free beer and free food are for everybody competing (tickets given on the day)

Railway Preservation Society of Ireland
Loco No. 4 will be used
The RPSI will run a Vintage Steam Train from Carrick to Boyle & return on Sunday 13th March. The train will be headed by Loco No.4 built in 1947 and acquired by the RPSI in 1971. The carriages were built by Cravens of Sheffield in the early 1960's and acquired by the Society in 2006 when the last of them came out of service.
