Primary Care Centre for Boyle

Local Government TD, Frank Feighan, has been informed by the HSE that it is will shortly have a preferred contractor in place to build the state-of-the-art Primary Care Centre for Boyle and surrounding areas.
“The HSE has informed me that the preferred developer will be in place by April 2015. According to the HSE, it is anticipated that  construction will then commence 6 months after this preferred bidder is selected, which would be approximately November 2015.
“When complete, the 17,000 square foot two-storey Primary Care Centre, being developed on the grounds of the Plunkett Nursing Home, will include GP suites, consulting rooms, physiotherapy and occupational therapy suites along with  a separate dental wing.
“The Centre will ensure that the local community has improved access to a greater range of health services within their own community.
“Primary care is central to this Government’s policy to deliver an integrated and cost-effective healthcare system focussing on delivering more care in the community, including preventative care. Up to 95% of people’s day-to-day health and social care needs can be provided in a community setting.
“I am also delighted that the construction of this Boyle project will also provide a welcome jobs boost for North Roscommon,” concluded Deputy Feighan.

Lord of The Dance

DSC02214

My problem while attempting to jot down my thoughts on saturday night's show in 3Arena ("The Point" if you prefer} is my shortage of superlatives. It was simply brilliant! A few suprises:
1. There were no spoken words
2. Ringlets have now been replaced with flowing blonde wigs
3. Casting off outfits for a female 'bikini dance' and a similar, but bare chested male routine were ... well, surprising!
4. I would judge thet most of the audience were waiting for Flatley to come on stage, even though the lead male dancer was superb and had all of the Flatley moves, Flatley's eventual entry on stage for the final 15 minutes could have come much earlier and his oversized white coat was OTT.
5. There were a few dull moments through the show (for me, the singer and the 3 or 4 songs were forgettable), but the spectactular sets, superb dancing and acrobatics could never be bettered.
6. A final word or two ... Michael Flatley still has the charisma of a latter day Elvis Presley. I thought the audience were about to lift the roof off the arena with their thunderous applause and standing ovations when he came onstage.
7. Ever since his first TV appearance in a Celebration of Mayo 5000 - long before Riverdance, he has helped Ireland regain its place as a world performer ... Thank you Michael Flatley.

Boil Water Update

Roscommon/South Leitrim Fine Gael TD, Frank Feighan, has been informed by Irish Water that the Boyle Water treatment plant is currently undergoing "process proving" before the Boil Water Notice can be lifted.
Apparently the Boyle plant has been commissioned and is supplying compliant water since February, but three clear samples are needed by the HSE and EPA before the notice is lifted. Deputy Feighan says this will bring to an end the constant boil water notices which have affected businesses and households for the last number of years.

Tourism Information Night

This coming Friday, March 27th at 9pm Emmett Corcoran & Daniel Curley in association with a number of local tourism providers and businesses will host an information night in Gleeson's Townhouse, Roscommon Town. The meeting is being held in order to develop an enterprise/social-enterprise lead strategy to promote County Roscommon and the surrounding areas both at home and abroad.

Our beautiful county has much to offer in regard to tourist attractions, as we all know. Yet, despite significant successes in recent years with regards to promoting tourism in the county, it seems we still largely remain a place people journey through as opposed to the destination. Many attractions in the county enjoy great success with increasing visitor numbers every year, but more can be done.

It is widely believed that if we as a county can achieve some level of joint-up thinking and develop a cohesive strategy to promote our county as a tourist destination we too can enjoy the success that has been seen in other parts of the west of Ireland. In order to that though, we must develop a practical plan and make sure it is put into action.

Representatives from the the Community tourism Network, County Council and Leader have been invited to the meeting and we hope they will be able to attend. There is also an open invitation being issued to all elected representatives in the area who are also welcome to attend.

A full agenda will be circulated on the night and there will be an opportunity for those in attendance to voice their ideas and for discussion on topics raised. Outside of the box thinking is what is required if we are to achieve the success we all seek. It is hoped that a free-flow of idea's and opinions on the night will enable us to start the ball moving on putting solid proposals in place to increase the tourism trade in the county, which will be beneficial for everyone.

We hope you can attend on the evening and that it will be the first step toward promoting Roscommon as the real hidden heart of Ireland.

St. Patrick's Day Parade 2015

P3171908Former Boyle Mayors Maire Paul and Peter Flannery on the review stand

We enjoyed a hugely successful St. Patrick's Day Parade in Boyle. It provided agreat opportunity to generate awareness of participants and what they do in the community. Our Mooneboys, David Rawle and Ian O'Reilly led the parade this year alongside Boyle's three Sigerson Cup Winners, Tadhg Lowe and Donie and Enda Smith.

Update 18th March

Change the Future - Astonishing Fact - 17th March

There are 1.8 million cars on Irish roads, which use a third of all energy used in Ireland.
Stopping global warming is not only good for your pocket, and good for your planet but it is also good for your health. Walking or cycling instead of driving to close by places means that you emit no carbon dioxide and makes you healthier.

St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day to you and yours. Today your relations and friends will think of you whether you are with us in Boyle for 3pm Parade, or enjoying the day far from home.
I send special greetings to my family closeby and those in London, Savannah, Sligo, Melbourne and Los Angeles.
Way back in 1994, the small hairs on the back of the neck of every Irish man and woman were set a-tingling with a sensational performance ... one that brought Ireland thundering on to the world stage in a special way. Proudly we are Ireland and proud we are to have talents like that of Michael Flatley and Riverdance. Sadly Michael's Sligo dad died a few days ago.

Priest named King of the Ring

We've had to endure singing priests, radical priests, thieving priests, abusing priests and one boring sermon after another. Could they answer their calling and do their job a little better each day ... now this: "He may be a man of the cloth, but Fr Pierre 'Jalapeno' Pepper became the king of the ring when he was victorious in a white-collar boxing match at the weekend."

Update 15th March

Change the Future - Astonishing Fact - 15th March

As well as being toxic, regular batteries take 50 times more energy to make than they contain.
Even the simplest changes like deciding whether to buy local brands or other brands make a difference to your carbon footprint. A great way to reduce your carbon footprint is to buy rechargeable batteries over regular batteries

The average Irish person emits 8.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually whereas the average Portuguese person uses only 5.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
• One of the simplest ways to reduce your carbon footprint is one of the most obvious. Turning off the lights when you leave the room is a surprisingly easy and effective way to reduce your carbon footprint

Bishop Kevin Doran

Shannonside FM report: Bishop of Elphin Kevin Doran appears to have realised that he "stepped over the mark" in his comments this week regarding homosexuality, and whether or not gay people who have children can be classified as parents. That’s according to Patsy McGarry, Religious Affairs Correspondent with the Irish Times, who says the hastily arranged press conference in Maynooth yesterday, and the clarification from Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and Catholic Primate Eamon Martin on Bishop Doran’s comments was a public humiliation of sorts, for Dr Kevin Doran.

ENTRY FORMS FOR FLOATS: Entry is free to this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade Tuesday 17th March at 3pm. Entry forms are available at Una Bhan Tourism, Creightons Bar, Clarke's Bar and Wynne's Bar. The Lawrence Collection

On the 20th March 1865 at the age of 24 William Mervin Lawrence opened a Photographic Studio opposite the G.P.O. at Sackville street Dublin. Over the years the studio successfully photographed the length and breadth of Ireland from Howth Head in the East to Achill Head in the West and from Malin Head in the North to Skibbereen the South). The collection consists of 40,000 glass plates mainly from the period 1880-1914, but some plates go back to 1870.
