Tony Conboy wrote; Roscommon V Monaghan on Sunday next has been moved to Kiltoom. It is a big pity that this had to happen as there is a big crowd expected to attend. Kiltoom is a grand ground but it will be under severe pressure to cope with the expected crowd on Sunday. It would be advisable to get your ticket as soon as you can as I imagine there would be a cap on the numbers allowed entry. Tickets can be had from Roscommon county board offices, Castlerea Rd, Roscommon. Queries to reception.roscommon@gaa.ie. There is a €5 discount for tickets purchased beforehand. I don’t know if SuperValu has tickets. Let me know!

Statistics may show Leitrim to have the smallest population in Ireland but when it comes to trad music, literature, dance and theatre it packs heavy punches. One of the latest ventures to emanate from a group of artists there is the Leitrim Equation concert performance which features the best of Leitrim music combined with poetry, dance and film in one carefully crafted show.
• Following its sell out premiere in Leitrim and at the RADA theatre in London, this wonderful show is returning home to a performance in Dublin at the Samuel Beckett Theatre on Friday 12th February.

Boyle/Roscommon Physio Conor McGowan - a Life-Saver

Photo submitted by a realboyle.com viewer

Tony Conboy wrote: "Huge plaudits and praise to Boyle Physio (Ballymote native) Conor McGowan for his life-saving intervention on Saturday evening last. Conor was Physio for the Roscommon U 21 team versus Leitrim in a Hasting’s Cup game which was being played at Rathcline, Lanesboro, Co. Longford.
• During the game a Leitrim player, Alan McTague, developed sudden life-threatening issues. Conor rushed to his aid and applied life-saving protocols such as CPR. He was assisted by the Leitrim physio. Officials also provided the GAA Club’s defibrillator which proved vital and Alan was treated until emergency services arrived.
He was then taken by helicopter to University College Hospital Galway where he has made excellent progress. The swift action of on-site physios from Leitrim and Roscommon as well as support staff has been widely praised.
• It is understood Alan suffered no injuries as a result of the incident and his recovery is progressing as normal. The game was called off at that point. Frankie Dolan, one of the U21 selectors, in talking to match commentator Willie Hegarty in Tuam yesterday about what happened suggested that teams might now consider bringing defibrillators to games as part of their medical back-up in case they happen to be playing in a grounds that did not have one.
• Chairperson of the Leitrim GAA county board, Terence Boyle says defibrillators are an integral part of ensuring people’s safety and should never be taken for granted.
It is interesting that running in the Boyle GAA Facebook notes just now is the following;
• “One place left on Defibrillator/Basic life support training taking place next Saturday 30th in the Boyle GAA clubhouse. To book contact Jan on 086 0667163”. Saturday’s incident certainly highlights the huge importance of this process and provision.
• Anyway Conor well done and you have a Leitrim family and the GAA community ever in your debt."

Leitrim Equation

Unique Leitrim Equation production
plays Dublin for one night only

“A strong narrative arc lit by music.  It’s tight, enthralling, different, and the audience loves it” - Deirdre Cronin.

Following its sell out premiere in Leitrim and at the RADA theatre in London, this wonderful show is returning home to a performance in Dublin at the Samuel Beckett Theatre on Friday 12th February.
The show looks to the long tradition of Leitrim music to trace a wider history full of colour, of love and loss, and of leaving and coming back. From the hills of Sí Beag and Sí Mór and the pits of the Arigna mines to the music of Irish communities of London and New York; the show describes how landscape shapes us, how we live, learn, and find beauty in the smallest of things. The production is the culmination of a residency in Leitrim with musicians Eleanor Shanley, Dave Sheridan, Padraig McGovern and John McCartin who have been researching and sourcing Leitrim music and song, and together with Dónal Lunny they will present beautiful arrangements of these tunes, some of which have not been played for over 100 years. The cast is completed by poet, playwright and broadcaster Vincent Woods and the captivating footwork of Seán Nós dancer Edwina Guckian with lighting design by Michael Cummins and film by Johnny Gogan.

“I loved the show. The music was superb, the dancing was superb, the visuals were beautiful, but the surprise was how brilliantly the poetry glued everything together. So simple but right on the nail.” - Stuart Ongley, SGO Music.

The Leitrim Equation Concert Performance
Samuel Beckett Theatre, Trinity College Dublin.
Friday 12th February at 8.00pm.
Tickets €20 – To book go to www.leitrimequation.ie or phone 01 896 2461.

Is this is Ireland we voted for?

How many people are homeless in Ireland? Just over 400 families were homeless in Ireland at the start of the year 2015 and by August that figure had increased to just over 700, a 76% rise in just eight months. Almost 1,500 children are now homeless, a 73% rise since the start of 2015.

First World Problems

Old_iPhone

"• I can't figure out which way to face my cup of coffee in the microwave so after 1 minute the handle will be facing me.
• I was screaming inside because I thought we were out of cinnamon stick flavored tea.
• I have two computers in one room, and their wireless mouses always connect to the opposite computer
• I bought a galaxy s5, but the bootloader is locked and i cant root it
• I cut my finger and now the Touch ID on my iPhone doesn't work.
• The little televisions attached to the treadmills at my gym were broken today, so I had to do my workout with no entertainment.
• Nobody cares about my problems."

Third World Problems

Poverty

• More than 870 million people of the entire third world population have no food to eat or a very precarious food supply i.e. more than the population of the US and the European Union combined.
• More than 800 million people have no access to health care. Women, children and men that die every year just because of lack of preventable health care services.
• A quarter or more of the entire world population lives without electricity in pitch black darkness as the night falls. That is around 1.6 billion people who do not know something like electricity exists. They are technically still living in Stone Age, no computers, no Internet, no appliances, no eFibre, no 1GB fibre.

Wednesday's Weather

Pictured above in Strasbourg on Tuesday (19th January) at a meeting to discuss the issue of competition in the Irish and UK beef sectors were (l-r) Jim Nicholson MEP, Margrethe Vestager Commissioner for Competition and Mairead McGuinness Fine Gael MEP for Roscommon and Vice-President of the European Parliament.

McGuinness and Nicholson Meet Commissioner and
Urge Immediate Action to Generate Competition in the Beef Sector

MEP for Roscommon and Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mairead McGuinness and Ulster Unionist MEP, Jim Nicholson this week (Tuesday 19th January) met with the European Commissioner for Competition, Margethe Vestager in the European Parliament in Strasbourg to discuss competition or a lack of it in the beef sector both North and South of the border.

MEP McGuinness stated that "the merger of ABP Food Group with Slaney Foods has consequences in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland" and she added that "farmers need a guarantee that this merger will not cause further distortions in an already highly concentrated market".

The Competition Commissioner reassured the MEPs that the issue will be dealt with by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority and Ireland's Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and if necessary, will be referred to the EU Commission to ensure that the proposed merger will not further distort the beef market.

Jim Nicholson MEP highlighted that the merger may uncover deeper competition issues in this market and will significantly highlight price gaps for beef in Northern Ireland compared to mainland UK.

The MEPs who are members on the European Parliament's Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, also raised the general issue of competition in the food sector arising from the imbalance of power between producers, processors and retailers.

Last year the European Parliament's Agriculture Committee unanimously voted in favour of adopting legislation to stamp out unfair trading practices in the food supply chain. The committee is awaiting the publication of a study from Commissioner Bienkowska that will assess voluntary initiatives such as the Supply Chain Initiative (SCI) and national best practices in tackling unfair trading practices.
