Update 30th August

Ardcarne Garden Cafe - Sunday Session

P8306257Jamie Barrier, Pine Hill Haints lead singer, guitar, fiddle and harmonica

I thoroughly enjoyed a session in the Cafe on Sunday afternoon performed by the Pine Hill Haints. I am hoping Cliona and Nessa will have further music sessions at the cafe. Every one so far has been brilliant! The Pine Hill Haints are an American traditional bluegrass/folk/honky tonk/country band from Alabama, though the band members themselves describe their unique southern roots music as “Alabama Ghost Music.”

Boyle GAA - a great win

Boyle GAA wrote: Huge congratulations to Boyle Senior team on their win over Strokestown this evening at Elphin. Boyle 1:11 Strokestown 1:7. At half time it was B. 0:6 Strokestown 0:2. The early spring training obviously told as all the B. players ran their socks off and Strokestown could not stay with the pace. The sight of Purcell and McKenna powering forward down the middle leaving the opposition in their wake was a joy.

Boyle Horse and Summer Show cancellation

Boyle Horse and Summer Show

Chairperson Aileen Madden wrote:It is with regret that the Boyle Horse and Summer Show committee have to announce that it has not been possible to secure a date in September to re-host the Show. The decision to cancel the show on Sunday morning was made with a very heavy heart but due to health and safety concerns we had no other option.

The summer of 2015 will be remembered as a complete wash out, with outdoor activities being cancelled throughout the country on a weekly basis.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Lynch and Lang families, all our sponsors, the volunteers who are the backbone of the Show, to the competitors who had their entries ready and to all those who had planned their Sunday around the Summer Show.

With our beautiful new venue to show case Boyle, the summer show will continue to grow as a formidable event in the agricultural/heritage event in Connaught and further afield.

Thank you again for all the support – Boyle Horse and Summer Show Committee.

At a recent Presentation of Certificates of Major Awards Level 5 in Information Technology,  Roscommon Learning Links expressed its delight with the marked increase in progression of their students since January of this year.  18 students have finished their Training since April 2015 almost 60% of those have opted to go to University or Further Education to achieve Higher Certificates at Level 6 or Degree Programmes while 35% have taken up full-time employment.  Their jobs include Tourism, Services Sector,  Hospitality,  Auctioneering and Construction.

Roscommon Learning Links Boyle, run full Time Level 4 and Level 5 Major Awards in Information Technology from their Training Rooms in Elphin Steet.

These are Local Training Initiatives funded by the GRETB-Galway Roscommon Education and Training Programmes. All Courses offer QQI Certification allowing students’ progress to further Education if they wish, or gain certification in Office Applications –an essential requirement for all most all administrative type roles. These Local Training Full Time Courses have been run in Roscommon Learning Links since 2010 and 100% achieving Certification with over 70% achieving Distinctions.

These courses are available to anyone who is currently unemployed and in receipt of a Social Welfare payment can be waitlisted for these Courses. They Run Full-time Monday to Thursday with a half day on Friday. Martina McGee the IT Specialist for the Centre confirms ’ one is never too old to start IT classes’, and indeed says ’ many of our students while starting out very cautious are astounded themselves at their own skills after a very short time’.

Anyone who is at a crossroads trying to decide where to next could do worse than pop in to Roscommon Learning Links to chat further about the Training Courses available. To anyone who may be disappointed with Leaving Results and in a quandary about what to do, once they are registered with social Welfare they too can join the programme where up to 400 points can be achieved on a Level Programme.

Places will be available in September so if interested or you wish to find out more, call either Martina /Siobhan on 071 9664510 or drop in to their offices (next door to Trojan) any morning.

Healthcare Modules are also being ran from the Centre commencing September 2015, and are advised, if interested to attend a GRETB Information evening in the Abbey Hotel Roscommon on Tuesday 1st September at 7pm, while if it’s Childcare you might be interested in,  an Information session is being held in Hannon’s Hotel Roscommon on Thursday 3rd September at 8pm. For further detail on Healthcare or Childcare modules call GRETB Roscommon on 090 663 4189.

A series of Computer Benefit Classes have just been completed at the Centre funded by Irish Rural Links where 20 participants have gained tuition and skill in Internet & Email. These classes were free and offered to those with little or no IT knowledge. It is hoped that these classes will be offered again in the Autumn. Accommodate homeless people from the cities?

Shannonside FM report: "There are over 600 people on the housing waiting list in county Roscommon." Cathaoirleach of the Boyle Municipal District, Rachel Doherty, says that with such long local waiting lists already, it would be crazy to consider any relocation plans and that rural counties like Roscommon and Leitrim do not have any extra capacity to provide accommodation for homeless people from the cities.

Following the disappointment of having to postpone Boyle Horse & Summer Show, and the excitement of the Roscommon Colour Run in Lough Key Forest Park, there was a treat in store for us in Boyle Abbey during the afternoon. A special Heritage Week Event was enjoyed by all who attended. Three hours of excellent Traditional Singing, Music, Monologues and Dance were performed by locals, including members of Boyle Abbey OPW staff, with special guests from counties Sligo and Leitrim. Teas, wines, sandwiches and buns went down a treat during a short break.
• Boyle Abbey is an excellent location for events like this, and it would be great to have repeats several times during the tourist season.
