Boyle Chamber / Boyle Town & More

Boyle Chamber/Boyle Town & More welcome new members....

Boyle Chamber is delighted to announce its Joint Presidents, Dara Callaghan and Alan Cooney. Dara served as Chamber President last year and has worked closely with Roscommon County Council, Christmas Lights Initiative lead by Stephen Bohan, Links to Lough Key & Boyle, Boyle Courthouse and the Boyle Enterprise Centre. The two will work together for the coming year, both of whom have many commitments and are heavily involved in other activities.
Our current group include longstanding members Mary Cretaro, Mary Clifford, Jackie Valentine, Mike Smith and Cecil Draper, more recent members over the last few years include Stephen Bohan, Ciaran O Connor, Patricia Golden, Brian Kelly, Gerry Whelehan and Siobhan Gallagher.  We welcome Alison Clarke and Bodo Funke this year, both very active in the community and development of Boyle. Bodo is representing the Tourism sector while Alison is delighted to join the Retail representatives. We would welcome more involvement from the Community in particular the retailers, retired business people or indeed any community activists who could work with us to help achieve goals and embrace new projects.
It is increasingly difficult for a small group of individuals to work miracles without the backing of the whole community, when each is already full-time in other roles and involved in other activities.
We thank the Boyle Community for their support and sponsorship in the Shuttle Bus initiative, new signage etc, this is certainly a great example of a town working together. Our Good Friday Quiz night in aid of Christmas Lights for Boyle proved also a most enjoyable and rewarding night and shows the more involved, the more fun and greater the results! We acknowledge the continued support of the Lotto Draw which allows us support projects in Boyle.
Special thanks to Marie Paul who has given hours, days and weekends to promoting Boyle Town in Lough Key. We know this personal greeting and guidance has helped significantly in the numbers of Lough Key visitors popping into Boyle. We have noticed also more families taking the Moone Boy Trail and increasing interest in Chris O Dowd’s home town. We once again acknowledge Chris never missing the opportunity to keep Boyle on the map, it’s up to the rest of us to ensure it lives up to ones expectations when they do visit!
If there is anyone who would like to get involved with us or assist in anyway, please contact any of the above at any stage over the coming days, weeks or months......! We’ll keep you updated on our planned activities for the coming year.

The RHA Gallery in Dublin is host an exhibition of works selected from The Boyle Civic Art Collection by RHA Director, Patrick Murphy from 5th September – 19th December 2014. There is an article in the current issue of Irish Arts Review about the event written by Frances Ruane. The article is also a tribute to Fergus Ahern and the Boyle Arts Festival.

Chris, Dawn and baby O'Porter

Chris O’Dowd and Dawn O’Porter are expecting their first child together. The Boyle actor revealed the news as part of his Ice Bucket Challenge video online. The ‘Moone Boy’ star (34) completed the charity challenge, which has gone viral online in recent weeks, and turned the camera to his wife as he nominated ‘Baby O’Porter’ to get dunked in water next.

Penalty Points

Over 19,000 motorists have been caught using their phone while driving this year. The law now states that drivers caught texting and using mobiles, even a hands-free kit, will face a mandatory court summons and a fine instead of just penalty points.
If a driver is caught texting on their phones they could face a fine of up to €1,000 for a first offence, increasing to €2,000 if it is a second offence, with the possibility of a three month jail sentence.

Overpricing in Supermarkets

Irish Times report: Supervalu and Tesco are just two of the businesses the National Consumer Agency have pulled up over overpricing some stock.

Smartwatch / Phone

Irish Times report: Samsung Electronics has unveiled what it said was the first smartwatch capable of making and receiving calls without a mobile phone nearby. Samsung’s new smartwatch, called the Gear S, features a 2-inch (5 cm) curved display and offers features like WiFi connectivity, pedestrian navigation and a built-in GPS.Samsung said the Gear S will start selling from October. It did not give details on pricing or where it will be available.

No job Losses at Avant Card

AvantCard has assured customers and employees that the closure of MBNA will have no impact on its business in Carrick-on-Shannon. Avantcard. who took over from MBNA in 2012, will not be affected by the proposed closure of MBNA in November.

Nature Under Pressure

Surge in corncrake population

During our youth during the haymaking season the krek-krek of the corncrake was a familiar sound. In recent decades their number has declined enormously as well as the locations that they are still to be found in. A couple of weeks ago there was an encouraging headline in the Sunday Independent which went; ‘Huge surge in corncrake population for second year in a row’. While the word ‘huge’ is used it refers to an increase in number from 185 recorded in 2013 to 230 in 2014. Apparently the most hospitable places for this bird are the islands off the west coast from Tory down to the islands off Mayo and Galway. Apparently meadow cutting has been the bane of the corncrake and I assume that silage cutting is no different. Farmers in some places have been encouraged to cut from the middle of the field towards the outside to give the bird the chance to escape. I have seen no evidence of this practise. However I hope to hear the ‘krek-krek’ of the corncrake again soon.
Another species in decline and I have not noticed many this summer is the honey bee. The bee plays a hugely important role in natural ecology. While the production of honey is one role the major role is in the process of plant pollination. Now I am not knowledgeable in all of this but from the television programmes I have seen it is of major significance. Come to think of it I haven’t heard much of the cuckoo either this summer. Maybe I need to go to Specsavers.

GAA Sports Review Nationally

One might have thought that sport would have been a side issue for these notes but they continue to roll off as each week-end produces more drama. Watching the first half of Mayo V Kerry was frustrating as the old Mayo symptoms emerged on cue. However they came out in the second half with courage and determination for one of the best halves I’ve seen from a Mayo team for a long time. It was uplifting and deserved that they emerge as victors. However in the drama of the final minutes a draw was probably regarded as justice. Another loss for Mayo, in those closing moments, would have been devastating and heart-breaking. And of course no county is better at the late surge than Kerry who deserve credit for their late rally also. While Cillian O’Connor got ‘Man of the Match’ my option would have been Aidan O’Shea who performed heroics as he seemed to carry Mayo-and some Kerry players also- on his broad shoulders.
It is a pity I suppose that the replay has to take place in Limerick’s Gaelic Grounds. However it will be a great boon for the city and could generate an atmosphere unique to itself. Corporate GAA are suggesting that it is a kind of ‘big games on tour’ kind of thing which I think  is flippant. I am not so sure that Limerick will favour Kerry as they are so used to playing in Croke Park it is more a home ground for them. I feel that Mayo are a better balanced side while Kerry have a number of top players as always. Kieran Donaghy showed  a great and appetite in his short but telling cameo on Sunday last and he will probably be there from the start on Saturday. I imagine the road to Limerick on Saturday will be akin to the one some of you might remember from 2006 when Roscommon won the minor All-Ireland replay in Ennis, just one long traffic jam. So if you are thinking of going to this unique occasion perhaps an overnight or two in the City of Culture would be the way to go.
While Donegal are just the side to rattle Dublin’s cage I cannot see them overturning the hot favourites in Croke Park on Sunday.

GAA Sport Locally

Boyle seniors gave their senior league status for 2015 a big boost with a deserved victory over Strokestown in the Abbey Park on Saturday evening. Against Pearses on the previous Sunday it would be difficult to nominate a Boyle player who had a good game. From Saturday it would be hard to nominate a Boyle player who had a bad game. There was much to admire in the high fielding and movement and general play of all participants. One catch by Evan McGrath was a throwback to earlier decades and Evan had a fine game. Unfortunately he received a hand injury and I wish him a speedy recovery. It is nice to see the young guns of the fine under-age teams of recent years coming so much into the frame. This coming Sunday evening they play Castlerea in the Championship to decide the final quarter- finalist and Boyle are in with a good chance here. The game is in Strokestown at 6.15 p.m.
After last Saturday’s game a seat in memory of Eoin Lavin was unveiled in the Abbey Park and it was fitting that Stokestown with whom Eoin’s teams had so many tussles down the years were there to witness and be part of a poignant occasion.
On Tuesday evening, a little by accident, I happened on the second half of a Boyle v Eire Og U 16 game in the Abbey Park. Eire Og were in a commanding lead for the most part but a late surge by Boyle earned them a draw. While all this is fine I was happy to be there to witness one of the finest goals I’ve seen scored in the ground and as a fellow might say, I’ve seen a few. There was a second excellent one also but it was overshadowed by a goal of power and majesty taken by Cian McKeon. While I am not familiar with this team another fine committed player on Tuesday evening for Boyle was young Deery.

Boyle Civic Art Collection Exhibition

Boyle Civic Art Collection Exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin
5th September – 19th December 2014

Press Release

Boyle Civic Art Collection Trustees Barry Feely and Conor Dowling packing items for the RHA Exhibition

The Boyle Arts Festival was established over 25 years ago as a small event providing a platform to local poets, singers and visual artists. Over the next few years it developed so that by the 1990s the visual artists exhibiting were of national importance. Alongside the art exhibition, the Boyle Arts Festival also developed a well-regarded national profile. In 1990 it was decided that the commission made on the sale of paintings would be used to acquire works of art for the town of Boyle. The first two paintings, by Joe Hanly and John Moore, were purchased in 1990 by Mr. Fergus Ahern and Mr. Barry Feely.
From its modest beginnings the collection has grown into a nationally recognised collection with over 280 pieces of art from nearly every known contemporary Irish artist. Mr. Fergus Ahern, curator of the Boyle Civic Art Collection from its inception until his untimely death in 2010, was the driving force behind the annual summer exhibition. The majority of the collection was purchased by him from sales commission of these annual exhibitions, with a number of works generously donated by the Haverty Trust and the artists themselves. Under the current curatorship of Mr. Barry Feely the collection continues to grow, with a number of exciting developments planned for its 25th anniversary in 2015.
The Boyle Civic Art Collection is at present displayed in a number of locations throughout Boyle, with the main body of work being housed in King House.

Boyle Musical Society / Rehearsals begin for ‘Grease’

Boyle Musical Society - Rehearsals begin for ‘Grease’

While it may not seem like it just yet, the evenings will soon be drawing in around us, meaning it’s time to think about what to do for the autumn….. You could, of course, do worse than take up evening classes for basket weaving, a foreign language or Aran sweater knitting. Or you could stay at home and rearrange your sock drawer. However, the best fun to be had this autumn will be taking part in Boyle Musical Society’s forthcoming production of the action-packed, fun-filled comedy musical, Grease!

Everybody should be familiar with the 1978 film, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Set in an American high school during the late 1950s, the film and indeed the stage musical are full of drama, comedy and classic songs like ‘Summer Nights’, ‘You’re The One That I Want’, ‘Greased Lightning’ and ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’.

Hollywood and Broadway star, Chris O’Dowd made his acting debut in Grease was staged by St. Mary’s College and Scoil Críost an Rí, back in 1993. Chris has a few things on this autumn and he might not make rehearsals, so who is going to dig out their old leather jacket and trainers, to fill his shoes?!!

Rehearsals for Grease will begin on Monday September 1st  in St. Joseph’s Hall, Boyle at 8pm and a warm welcome is extended to all new, former and existing members to join up for twelve unforgettable weeks of music, singing, drama, dancing, comedy and lots more….
Rehearsals will continue in the Hall at 8pm on Thursday Sept. 4th and thereafter on Monday and Thursday nights. Our Musical Director Anne and Director/Choreographer, Vivienne will be on hand to outline the show to everybody, so come along and join the fun. It is hoped to have the principal parts in the show cast by mid September, so we are really expecting a big turnout at the first rehearsal.
Boyle Musical Society will stage Grease from Wednesday November 19th until Sunday November 23rd in St. Joseph’s Hall, Boyle.

Following months of planning by a small and dedicated committee, yesterday's Boyle Horse & Summer Show 2014 was our best ever. The weather might have become a problem, but it didn't. Fears that the ground might be too wet were not realised. Hundreds turned up and enjoyed the day of spectacle with two horse jumping arenas, a 28 category dog show that displayed 75 gorgeous dogs, onsite food and trade stalls and entertainment enclosures for our 'young-uns'
The committee can relax today in the sure knowledge that they have given us another hugely successful show ... Congratulations to them, their marshals, assistants, markers, judges and all involved ... roll on 2015! View photos [here...]

See fixtures for details of any upcoming fixtures for the National Automation Limited minors. The McGovern Directional Drilling had what may prove to be a very significant O’Rourke Cup victory over Strokestown in a very exciting game in the Abbey Park on Saturday. The team went in a point down at half time but a 10 minute period at the beginning of the second half saw the tables turn and a goal from Mark O'Connor put the game beyond the reach of Strokestown. Best for Boyle were Evan McGrath, Roch Hanmore and Darren O'Connor. The team have one remaining fixture in this competition--against Kilmore on a date to be arranged. They will be back in Senior Championship action on Sunday evening next when they take on Castlerea St Kevins in the play-off to determine the one remaining Championship Quarter Final place. This game will be played in Strokestown at 6.15pm. The Club encourages full support in this important game for the lads.

The Jack L concert in King House last night is one I won't forget easily. Before the show I had read "The Main Salon will once again be filled with Jack’s velvety tones as he performs songs, new and old. Jack Lukeman (Jack L), is an artist with dramatic vocals, Show-goers will be treated to a display of music, song, humor and an enthusiasm for his art that is infectious. He makes song interpretation look easy as he moves between genres effortlessly and has his audience in the palm of his hand." ... I couldn't agree more! Comments I heard afterwards included words like Sinister, Scary, Amazing voice, Hypnotic, Brilliant Singer and Stage Performer.
Jack's show was preceded by Bernadine Casserly who is singing better than ever and preformed a beautiful set of her favourites. View photos from the dimly lit venue[here...]

Frank Feighan TD - Tribute to Albert Reynolds

The Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, Frank Feighan TD, has this morning offered his condolences to the family and friends of Albert Reynolds, who died this morning.
Deputy Feighan TD: "Albert Reynolds achieved much in business and politics in an extraordinary life, but it is his role in securing peace on our island that will be his most enduring legacy.
During his tenure as Taoiseach, Mr Reynolds made an indelible contribution to the peace process. An accomplished negotiator, he displayed great courage, skill and single-mindedness in keeping the channels of communications open with republicans and loyalists during a turbulent period. His strong partnership with then British Prime Minister John Major led to the signing of the landmark Downing Street Declaration, which would pave the way for the Good Friday and St Andrew’s Agreements.
On behalf of the Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, and on my own behalf, I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Albert Reynolds."

Frank Feighan TD - MBNA statement

Frank Feighan TD calls on Minister to concentrate on job creation in Carrick-on-Shannon following MBNA closure – while efforts to sell off the facility and retain jobs locally must continue
Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim, Frank Feighan, has today (Thursday) called on the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, to consult with Enterprise Ireland and other stakeholders following the closure of the MBNA call centre in Carrick-on-Shannon.
“It is very regrettable that MBNA has made the decision to close the call centre in Carrick-on-Shannon and to base their service from the UK. This is a huge blow to the 160 people affected.
“I have been in contact with the Minister for Jobs, Richard Bruton and I have appealed to him to consult with Enterprise Ireland and other stakeholders to consider other options for those who have lost their jobs.
“He has assured me that the Enterprise Agencies will redouble their efforts to drive job creation in the area. The people who lost their jobs today are skilled workers who have a lot to contribute. We want these people to be able to get new jobs in the locality.
“The Minister has informed me that a coordinated response to the closure will see resources from Enterprise Ireland, the IDA the Local Enterprise Office, Department of Social Protection, Solas, Chambers, Department of Education & Skills directed towards helping those affected.
“The original MBNA operation in Carrick-on-Shannon, which was sold to Advent/Apollo in 2012, continues to operate well and still provides 250 jobs.
“On a national level, the Action Plan for Jobs is working and more people are getting back to work. The news of job losses in Carrick-on-Shannon is a major blow and the Government is determined to work to ensure that growth takes place in all regions of the country.
“Carrick-on-Shannon is a great place to do business and I am committed to working, with my Government colleagues, towards creating new job opportunities for the people of the area, while at the same time efforts must continue to sell  off the facility and retain the jobs in Carrick-on-Shannon says Deputy Feighan.

Boyle Arts Festival Committee - Thank You

Boyle Arts Festival 2014, was a resounding success and on behalf of our Chairperson, Brendan and all the members of the Festival Committee, I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all, who helped make the 25th annual Festival what it was.

We the committee, would especially like to pay tribute to our sponsors and patrons, who never fail to support us year after year and without whom, there would undoubtedly be no Boyle Arts Festival.

We are also deeply indebted to all of our local volunteers, who gave so freely of their time by  helping at the ‘door’ during all the events, collecting and hanging artwork, assisting in the ticket office, distributing posters and programmes, assisting at the exhibitions and indeed helping out in any way.
To all those who brightened up the town by allowing us to hang our flags and to all who made vacant premises available to us, a very special word of thanks.

Publicity is an integral part of any Festival and we would like to thank all the local, regional and national newspapers and radio stations for all their help over the last few months. Special thanks also to www.realboyle.com and www.boyletoday.com

We must extend sincere gratitude to all those who travelled from near and far, to attend all of the events, exhibitions and workshops at Boyle Arts Festival 2014. We have been overwhelmed at the support we received, especially from the people of Boyle who turned out in greater numbers than ever. Almost every event had capacity audiences and several were even sold out in advance! We are truly grateful to the local and wider community, for all their support.

And finally, we would also like to thank all the visual artists, performers and contributors who took part in BAF 2014. The BAF Committee are always striving to bring art, music and culture from afar and this year we were delighted to showcase pianists from both Russia and Japan. We also had contributors from Wales and Australia at our spoken word events – and we were delighted to present a world premiere performance from saxophonist, Kenneth Edge, who unveiled his especially composed piece ‘I’m Learning How to Somersault’ during the Mícheál Ó’Súilleabháin concert, in the Church of Ireland.

We cannot of course forget all of the local artists, performers and contributors who once again, made this year’s Festival so special. Without them, Boyle Arts Festival would be incomplete and it is heartwarming to think that there is so much great talent on our doorstep!

Plans are already underway for the 26th annual Boyle Arts Festival will take place from July 23rd until August 1st 2015.

For more information please go to www.boylearts.com or follow us of Facebook and Twitter.

Brendan McGee,
Boyle Arts Festival Committee.

Twin Fest 2014

Twin Fest 2014 has it covered

Its all go in Keash, Co Sligo, as preparations are underway to host the 5th International Twin Fest on Saturday, 23 August.
The festival which celebrates twins and multiples has already received numerous online registrations however more will register on the day of the major event.
The numbers have risen steadily over the years which started in 2010 with 55 sets of twins and in 2013 saw 300 sets, plus 4 sets of triplets and one set of quads.
The organisers expect this number to rise significantly this year.
Taking no chances with the weather, Patrick Ward, founder of the festival, is moving the event from The Fox's Den to the nearby Keash Equestrian Centreto ensure a pleasant day for all.
Mr Ward paid tribute to the Devine family for allowing their prestigious establishment to house the festival.
Everything kicks off on the day from 2pm-6pm and followed by party at the popular Fox’s Den from 7pm with live music and a BBQ.
There will be lots of activities throughout the day to suit all the family and all age groups.
A clown show, magic show, barber shop quartet and a kids disco hosted by dance instructor Gertrude Greaney from Dance Fusion and the very popular Kidisco.ie will be at hand to entertain all. Face painting, bouncy castles, and Bumper Ballz are just a handful of what will be at hand to keep everyone busy and happy.
Twin Fest was founded to raise funds for a meningitis charity in memory of baby Katie Garvey who succumbed to this deadly disease. The well supported event has now grown to a national, and even an internationally recognised festival raising €15,784 for a number of charities and awareness for Meningitis and attracted twins from as far away as USA, Hong Kong and Austraila.
Patrick Ward admits that as the years progress it is getting more and more difficult to secure funds to host the event and said that the festival is delighted to be working again with Act for Meningitis, a Galway based charity and was chosen as the charity choice for 2012, 2013 and again for 2014.
More details can be found at www.twinfest.ie Facebook or Twitter.

The Seniors will have O’Rourke Cup action in the following week with a home game against Strokestown.
The Club extends its thanks to everyone who helped in the successful hosting of the County Senior Football Championship double header in the Abbey Park on Saturday last. This includes not only the many Club (male and female clubs) members who helped on the occasion, but also those who helped prepare and tidy the venue in the days leading up to the games. Thanks also to the Gardaí for their assistance in traffic management.
Congratulations are extended to former Boyle and Roscommon player Damien Keenehan who was a member of the Wolfe Tones team that retained the Melbourne Championship title in Australia recently.
There will be an important Club meeting on this Wednesday at 9pm to make plans for some interesting fundraising projects as well as other matters. All members are requested to attend.
Tickets are about to go on sale for a very attractive fundraising draw which includes a trailer load of top quality wood for your winter fuel, heating oil and cash. Tickets will be available from Club officers over the coming weeks.
