Boyle Courthouse Project

Boyle Courthouse Project

Since the setting up of Boyle Courthouse Development Committee in 2012, the committee have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the courthouse building will have the necessary building works completed to provide a premises that will incorporate a new tourist attraction. The attraction will further enhance the tourism product in Boyle.

A firm of conservation architects, Hamilton Young, has been engaged by the committee.  The courthouse was surveyed and a ‘Conservation Method Statement’ was prepared.  Planning permission for the necessary works was applied for and obtained.  Simultaneously talks were ongoing with Roscommon County Council to obtain a lease on the courthouse.  At the last meeting of Roscommon County Council a motion to hand the courthouse over to the committee by means of a lease was passed, however, this will need to be ratified at the next council meeting.  The development company has finally received a draft lease from the council.  A couple of clauses are still the subject of negotiations but it is envisaged the final lease will be ready for signing shortly.

Before the lease can be signed, there is a requirement that relevant insurance policies must be in place together with some other documents, such as ‘Fire Safety Statements etc. which all cost money.  A number of funding applications are now in progress.  In most cases, funding cannot be applied for until a lease is in place.  With a lease imminent, the first fundraising event is planned.

A Duck Race will take place on the Boyle River on Saturday, May 2nd commencing at the bridge on Bridge Street at 1pm.  Ducks will cost €5 each - 1st Prize, €500, 2nd Prize €200 and 3rd €100. Cards will be distributed around the town this weekend so please make sure you get your duck early!
