Bright Spark Quiz

P4032140

Last night's Bright Spark Quiz in St. Joseph's Hall was a great success on several levels.
• An estimated 350 contestants took part, splitting into more than 70 table groups
• Over €3,500 will be available for and running Boyle's Christmas Lights fund
• The current Boyle Chamber of Commerce are a great bunch and deserve our thanks
• In particular, Stephen Bohan and his 'lights team' have done our town proud
• At the finish, three teams were tied for first place. The Tighe family, Stephen, Sharon, Laura and Josh came out as winners
A huge 'well done' all who took part, quizmaster Jnr. Smith, behind the scenes personnel, and all who contributed spot prizes.

Holy Week Ceremonies at St. Joseph's

Holy Thursday: (2nd April) Mass of the Lord's Supper at 8pm, followed by Procession to the Altar of Repose in the Convent Chapel. Watch and Pray until midnight. Holy Hour from 11pm.
Good Friday: Celebration of the Lord's Passion at 3pm. Stations of the Cross in boyle Abbey 7pm
Holy Saturday: Vigil at 9.30pm
Easter Sunday: Masses 9.30am and 11.30am

St. Joseph's Church, Boyle

Easter weather

Blue skies and sunny days will arrive in time for the Easter break, with forecasters expecting temperatures as high as 15C over the long weekend.

Good Friday

'GOOD': The title begs the question "What is 'good' about the day"?. Check it out and you will be confronted with "Good Friday is a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary" ... so what was 'good' about that barbarous act and who decided this was 'good'?
• I prefer the reference that it is a corruption of the words 'God Friday' ...
• On another level I wonder why we use the crucifix as the prominent symbol of our belief. This was a barbarous act committed by others that has nothing whatever to do with Christian Peace, Reconciliation and Love.

Ardcarne Garden Centre

HAPPY EASTER: Now it's well and truly spring, the days are getting warmer and the evenings longer, you'll want to be outside in the garden from dawn till dusk! We've lots going on at the garden centre this weekend. Every customer this weekend will be entered into a draw to win a FREE Garden Design worth over €300. We're open all weekend - hope to see you soon.

Jimmy's Hall

Jimmy's Hall

I watched the film "Jimmy's Hall" on Netflix after the Holy Thursday Church Ceremony. The film recalls one of the more shameful episodes in the infancy of the Irish Free State. The Catholic Church and compliant politicians ensured that Jimmy Gralton would be hunted, as his mother put it, "like a wild deer", and become the only Irish citizen to be deported from his own country, without trial, in August 1933.

Essays and Observations - Boyle's All Ireland Fleadhs

TONY CONBOY WROTE: "I was in Boyle once ... many years ago now. It was during one of the great Fleadhs ... the best I was ever at ... I remember it well ...great days, great music!" I have had this reaction more than once whenever I mention that I'm from Boyle. The Boyle All Ireland Fleadhs live on in the memories of the thousands who visited the town on those memorable weekends so many years ago. They act too as markers in the memories of those involved.
