Thank You Boyle ...

Just looking back on my posts I realise that I didn't properly thank good folks for their great work, thought and commitment in organising a very splendid Moone Boy Fest including the fabulous Italia 90 event last Saturday. Apologies and congratulations to all my friends at Úna Bhán, Boyle Chamber of Commerce, Boyle TM and Boyle Traders. You made our family feel greatly honoured.

Boyle GAA Update 28th October

The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in the Railway Bar: John Healy, Gerry McCormack, Eileen and Gerry Callaghan, Mary Rooney, Timothy Regan and Kate Gilmartin. The house prize was won by Thomas Conroy. There was no jackpot winner and it will be at €7,400 for next Saturday night’s draw which will be held in Clarkes Bar. Team D will be in charge.
It was a quieter than usual weekend on the playing fields, with the National Automation Limited U21s making their Division 1 County Championship debut with a three point win over Michael Glaveys in Castlerea on Saturday. The scoreline was Boyle 3  5, Michael Glaveys  0  11. All but one point of Boyle’s scores were got by Donie Smith. The lads are scheduled to play Roscommon Gaels in the next round of this competition on Saturday next but it may be postponed.
The U14s are expected to play their Garda Cup semi final next weekend--see fixtures. Plans are progressing for the “Who Wants to be a Thousandaire” show which will be held in St Joseph’s Hall on Saturday 6th December. Numerous businesses have committed to advertise. We are especially anxious to ensure that no local firms or businesses miss the opportunity to advertise and those who have not yet been contacted are asked to make contact with any of the Team Leaders Stephen Tonra, Karen Brogan, Martin Dolan, Aidan Lavin, Mary Clifford and Len Sutton. A meeting of Team Leaders and their assistants will be held in the Clubroom on tonight (Tuesday) at 9pm. Thanks is extended to all who assisted in cutting, splitting and filling the trailer load of timber which was the first prize for the recent Club Draw. Special thanks is extended to Michael Furey for providing the timber and the site for the operations and for delivering the timber to the lucky winner Kevin Lavin.
The Club will hold a very special fundraising challenge game on Saturday week 8th Nov at 3pm to mark the retirement from the playing of competitive football by Cian Smith. Cian is the proud holder of an All Ireland medal with Roscommon’s Minors of 2006. Most followers of football will know that Cian has bravely battled health problems for some years and has continued to play despite adversity. He is hanging up his boots in advance of going for surgery in mid November. To mark the occasion there will be a very attractive line up of players in the Abbey Park as a Boyle selection managed by David Casey will take on a selection of well known players from throughout the County, including many of his 2006 All Ireland title winning colleagues and past and present county players. The proceeds from the game will be shared between the Kyle Casey Fund and Mayo Roscommon Hospice and admission will be optional. Further details next week.

Frank Feighan TD

Roscommon South Leitrim TD Frank Feighan has been appointed as the new Irish Co-Chair of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly.
He was formally ratified at the Assembly’s 49th Plenary Session in Ashford in Kent.
Deputy Feighan joins Westminster co-Chair Laurence Robertson MP in setting the direction of the Assembly, which works to foster links and dialogue between parliamentarians and groups across the two countries.
Speaking this morning, Deputy Feighan said political cooperation across the two islands has never been stronger with the visit of Queen Elizabeth here and President Michael D Higgins to the UK.
The Fine Gael TD says he intends to use his new position to build on the goodwill that both visits have generated.
Deputy Feighan will continue to work as Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.

Press Release:

Deputy Frank Feighan appointed co-Chair of British Irish Parliamentary Assembly

21 October 2014

Deputy Frank Feighan TD has been appointed as the new Irish Co-Chair of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly. The appointment was formally ratified at the Assembly’s 49th Plenary Session, taking place in Ashford in Kent.
He joins Westminster co-Chair Laurence Robertson MP in setting the direction of an Assembly that works to foster links and dialogue between parliamentarians and groups across these islands.
Speaking this morning, Deputy Feighan said: “With the reciprocal state visits of Queen Elizabeth and President Michael D. Higgins, political cooperation across our islands has never been stronger. Of course, the visits have in many ways cemented the close bonds between our peoples for generations. I intend to use my new position to meaningfully harness the goodwill that both visits have generated. It was a particular honour to participate in the Assembly visit to the memorial sites of Flanders yesterday, where we sombrely remembered all those from these islands who fell in World War One.”
“As our economies emerge from the financial crisis of recent years, the Assembly will continue to provide a valuable forum for fruitful exchanges on fostering trade, enterprise and commerce. Trade between the UK and Ireland amounts to approximately one billion euros per week, and supports by some estimates about 400,000 jobs on both sides of the Irish Sea. So I am acutely aware that Britain and Ireland must continue work very closely together at commercial and trade levels to overcome the economic challenges facing our countries.”
“Over the years, the Assembly has played an understated role in bringing about a much better understanding between parliamentarians from London and Dublin. And now it also includes representatives from legislatures from Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. So it is great honour to have been appointed co-Chair and I thank the Members of the Assembly for the confidence they have displayed in me. I look forward to working with my counterpart Laurence Robertson MP through the challenging times ahead.”
Deputy Feighan will continue to work as Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
“I believe there will be great synergy between my work on the Good Friday Agreement Committee in Leinster House and this new role. The securing of peace and stability from the Good Friday Agreement has unleashed significant economic gains for Northern Ireland and the border region. Peace remains fragile and cannot be taken for granted and I will continue to work with my Committee colleagues from both sides of the border to secure the progress of the past 16 years.”

About the Assembly:

The Assembly's mission is to promote co-operation between political representatives in Britain and Ireland for the benefit of the people they represent. BIPA’s membership includes representatives from the UK Parliament, the Houses of the Oireachtas, the Scottish Parliament, the Northern Ireland Assembly, the Welsh Assembly, the High Court of Tynwald (Isle of Man) and the States of Guernsey and Jersey

What is BOB?

dawn_o_porter_688pic from Dawn's website www.bobbydop.com/

BOB isn’t a person, and it doesn’t stand for anything either. It is an iconic haircut of the 1960’s which is probably the reason its the hairstyle of the founder Dawn O’Porter, who has a particular obsession with this decade. Dawn’s love of fashion comes from the nostalgia of the past. She scours the earth searching for clothes that have impact and a sense of recent history. Wanting to spread that sentiment she created BOB Vintage - to make those pieces available to you.
... and yes, Dawn will be in Boyle next week with husband Chris O'Dowd

"A Delicate Wilderness" - The Life and Loves of David Thompson by Julian Vignoles

Woodbrook, an Excerpt by David Thomson

“My favourite bar in Boyle was John Cryans, it was unusually bright and when its doors were open you missed nothing of what was going on outside. It was on the corner. His grocery shop opens onto the main hilly street, with the Royal Hotel, where judges, generals and travellers had stayed since the eighteenth century, beside it the river below that; and his bar opened onto the side street that leads to the Carrick road. That was the street where the horses stood on a fair day, and from John Cyan’s bar you could watch what went on. He had stools at the grocery counter too, but to drink there among people who were doing their shopping was exclusive, something like a saloon bar in England at the time. His real bar was only about 12 feet long and five wide, and was perfectly simple, ornamented only with advertisements for drinks that no longer existed, such as D.W.D.-DUBLIN WHISKEY DISTILLERY on a large mirror printed with red, black and gold, or drinks long unknown like Buchanan’s Scotch Whiskey, which had chosen for its advertisement a large framed picture of two white dogs fighting in a basket and a black one looking on. He also cut out and framed a picture with horses from a Dublin Horse Show poster. However crowded John Cyan’s bar was, it was peaceful”.

How fitting that Julian Vignoles author of “A Delicate Wildness” should choose Creighton’s bar in the John Cryan building as the perfect venue for his book signing October 25th, 2014 at 4:00 pm.

Shane Curran - "Cake"

Cake by Shane Curran

I had the pleasure of sharing the Friday Panel on Shannonside FM with Roscommon GAA legend Shane Curran last week.
Shane's new book is an autobiography of a passionate, outspoken sportsman and entrepreneur. "Brave, honest and hilarious, and full of entertaining yarns and challenging observations on the state of the GAA and the world, Cake tells the story of an Irish sportsman who has lived the dream in his own utterly original way."
Add this great read to your Book List... Chris O'Dowd refers to Shane Curran [here...]

Repairs to Boyle Bridge

Shane Feely and Feelystone Ltd., Boyle are carrying out excellent repair work on the damaged Boyle Bridge. In addition to repairs, craftsmen at Feelystone had to carve four new pillars similar to the existing ones. Shane tells me works will be completed quickly. The repairs will be noticable for a time, but will age gracefully.
Contractors will also replace the footpaths on both sides of the bridge
