"No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish" / "Through Christy's Lens" book launch / Abbey Haven Sale Of Work / Boyle Country Meats / Bank of America closure in Carrick / 'Strong gay scene' in Irish Catholic church

"No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish"

How sad this must have been !!

In 1960's England, and in London in particular, many landlords and owners of bed & breakfasts and boarding houses put signs in their windows stating "No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish".
• I wonder could we here in Ireland be just as racist, but towards the community we refer to as "Travellers".
• Is it time for us to challenge prejudices and open dialogue so that we will never think "No Travellers"?

"Through Christy's Lens" book launch

The Grand Salon, King House was full for the launch of "Through Christy's Lens" on Friday 28th December. The book will be great reference for times and persons down through the years. Christy was undoubtedly a man ahead his time. Through the book's 200+ pages, hundreds of Christy's photos are shown and stories published in memory of Christy ... all will be treasured memories.
• I was delighted to design the book cover and back page, as well as a launch poster.
• In the book's introduction Christy's wife Mary wrote: "I would like to dedicate this book to the memory of my beloved Christy, whose constant love, support, laughter and guidance enabled me to pick myself up, dust myself down and face the world with confidence"
• Proceeds from book sales will be donated Sligo Hospital's Oncology Unit.

'Strong gay scene' in Irish Catholic church

Ground-breaking new research into the sexual lives of Irish Catholic priests has revealed many of them are or have been sexually active, that the bishops are aware of the situation, and that there is a gay scene within the church.

Eating Out in Boyle

"You eat first with your eyes", Polish chef Mirek once told me. In other words presentation of the food on your plate might be referred to as a sort of culinary aphrodisiac. Whatever the end result, there are now a number of great places to eat out in Boyle. Recently I had lunch in Clarke's Bar & Restaurant and a Chinese meal in Tai Chi Court. Both were just as tasty as their excellent presentation suggested they might be.

Katie created international boxing history after being crowned AIBA World Elite lightweight champion in South Korea this weekend. She has now won 17th major titles - one Olympic, five World, six European and five European Union since 2005.

Tax relief for care of the elderly

Finance Minister Michael Noonan introduced an amendment to the Finance Act this week, to help families care for elderly relatives at home by employing a nurse or carer. The amendment will raise the level of tax relief available to employ a professional nurse or carer in the home from 50,000 euro to 75,000 euro a year.
Elderly people often need extra support and care in order to stay in their own homes, and this new tax relief will make a big difference to families in terms of affording these costs.

“WHO WANTS TO BE A THOUSANDAIRE” COMES TO BOYLE

Boyle GAA Clubs (the Male Club and the Ladies Club) have joined forces to host the hugely popular “Who Wants to be a Thousandaire” show to St Joseph’s Hall, Boyle on Saturday 6th December.
This show has attracted large audiences all over Ireland over the past seven years and is fast becoming the most popular source of fundraising for schools and clubs.
Contestants are drawn from ticket sales and each contestant will play for €1,000. The show is fully computerised with 50/50, Ask the Audience and a brilliant video linked Phone a Friend. The questions and four possible answers are displayed on two 8ft by 6ft screens, one at each side of the stage.
This incredibly successful show, which is provided by Pallas Marketing Limited, is being run by Boyle GAA Clubs to assist in fundraising to reduce outstanding debts on its excellent Clubroom and pitch and to provide funding for future development at the grounds. The launch night for the show was held in the Clubroom in the Abbey Park on Wednesday 5th November before a large audience, including representatives of our nine major sponsors—Cooney Motors, Boyle,---  Drumderrig House Nursing Home, Boyle--- Elverys Sports – Homeland Nutrias Animal Nutrition --- Joe Simon Home and Garden and Build, Boyle.--- King and Moffatt Electrical, Carrick on Shannon---, Lough Key Forest and Activity Park,---Mulveys Bowling, Nursery, Giftware, Toymaster and Kids Kingdom, Carrick on Shannon,  ---, and Roscommon GAA Health and Wellbeing Initiative. Also present was Mr Tom Shanahan from the show providers, Pallas Marketing. The first purchasers of tickets on the night were Sean O’Dowd of Realboyle.com and Fiona Mattimoe.
Club Secretary Mary Clifford and Club Chairperson Martin Dolan stated that they had recently seen the “Who Wants to be a Thousandaire”show in Tuam  and they were most impressed by hi-tech nature of the show and the excitement generated by the quiz competition itself, especially when competitors were on the cusp of winning €1,000. They enjoyed the buzz from the audience who obviously enjoyed every minute of the three hours of the show.
Those who come to St Joseph’s Hall on 6th December will have a night to remember. The show is timed to start at 8pm and we encourage patrons to purchase their tickets early as there will be a full house and numbers are limited. All tickets must be purchased in advance and they are available from the officers of Boyle GAA Clubs (Male and Female Clubs).  All ticket purchasers who attend on the night have an opportunity to have their ticket drawn out to enable them to compete in one of the nine rounds of the competition. A total of €9,000 may be won on the night. Ticket purchasers may put their own name on the ticket or alternatively they don’t want to go on stage, they may put the name of a friend who may compete instead.
We would like to say a special word of thanks to our nine major sponsors and to in excess of 100 businesses who have advertised with us. There is still some large screen advertising available and those wishing to advertise should contact any of the officers within the next week or so.

Frank Feighan - Water Charges

Households on boil water notices will not pay charges - Feighan
Affordable plan for water provides certainty and secures investment

Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/ South Leitrim, Frank Feighan, has welcomed the news that households on boil water notices will not pay water charges. Deputy Feighan was speaking after the Government’s announcement on water today (Wednesday), which he says provides a fair, simple and affordable plan for people ahead of the introduction of water charges.

“The Government’s new water charges plan will ensure that households on boil water notices will not pay water charges. For everyone else, the new plan is simple, fair and affordable.

“Charges will be capped at €160 for single adult households and €260 for all other households. Once the universal water conservation grant of €100 is applied, the maximum net charges will be €60 per year, or just over €1.00 per week for single adult households. All other households’ maximum net charge will be €160 per year, or €3.00 per week.

“All eligible households will receive the Water Conservation Grant of €100 per year from the Department of Social Protection, once they have registered with Irish Water. Also of importance for many people is the fact that PPS numbers will not now be required to avail of the allowance.

“Households with either their own private well or their own septic tank will pay 50% of the new rates. Households with both their own private supply and a septic tank will pay nothing to Irish Water. However they will still be eligible for the €100 Water Conservation Grant to help them offset their water costs.

“The installation of water meters will continue – meters reduce bills and find leaks. People with meters will be charged the capped or metered rate, whichever is lower, allowing them to beat the cap by conserving water. If metered households can reduce their water consumption by between ten and fifteen per cent, then approximately half of Irish households will be able to ‘beat the cap’.

“The focus on water conservation will continue. Irish Water’s investment programme will stop the leaks, ensure everyone has good, clean water and that the country has the water infrastructure it needs to secure investment and grow the economy. For example, work is to begin on water projects all over Roscommon by 2016, including the various Roscommon Regional Water Supply Schemes, the Roscommon Town Sewerage Scheme and the Birr Water Supply Scheme.
“The start date for water charges has been moved to 1st January 2015 and the first water bills will arrive next April. We will introduce legislation that will allow capped charges to continue to be set from 2019 onwards.

“Water will remain in public ownership. The Government will legislate to ensure any proposed change in the ownership of Irish Water would be required to be put before the people.

“We have listened to people and arrived at a fair and affordable solution. The fact is that all workers will have their tax bill cut next year and will actually be better off in 2015 even after paying for their water charge. The new water charges plan gives people certainty while allowing the country to invest in our broken water infrastructure.”

They have done it again! Boyle Musical Society have produced a brilliant show and until Sunday night's final performance the cast will perform a spectacular musical nightly form 8pm with gorgeous Colour, spectacular Song and Dance, excellent Lighting with added Touches of Genius that drew gasps of appreciation from Wednesday night's Full House audience.
• Every year producer/choreographer Viv Moran and musical director Anne Kielty shape and mould a diverse group of amateur performers and in so doing, bring joy to our area, elevate Boyle Musical Society's reputation and inspire creative spirits to search, soar and succeed.
• Every year too, we realise that talent is an outstanding feature in this region of ours. Cast members from previous shows take a break for a few years and return again as their lives shift, babies are born and commitments draw in different yet the same directions.
• It would be remiss of me if I didn't single out some of the cast for special mention, but with that thought in mind, my feeling was that the entire cast, orchestra and backing singers, sound, lighting, backstage and front of house personnel are to be congratulated on jobs done exceedingly well.
• Stars that drew particular note: Collette Noone, Adrian King, Marc Egan, Grainne Caldbeck, Darragh Beirne, Gavin Ward, Enda Regan, Robert Reid ... but then I should continue to name the entire cast :-)

'The Rockingham Projects'

pic © sean Rafferty

Sean Rafferty, grandson of the late Pat Flanagan has created a great new website, a resource for information about aspects of the past in our area.
'The Rockingham Project' is a documentation of the projects carried out by Sean Rafferty relating to the site of the former Rockingham Demesne. The website is in the early stages of its development, but will continue to grow over time as further projects are carried out. It is intended that the website can eventually be both a reference point and repository for locals and outsiders; a place to view and contribute documents, articles, videos and other ephemera relating to the multi-layered cultural, social and historical landscape of Rockingham.

Did you know?

Roscommon A&E was axed in July 2011. At the time the following was reported:
• Dr David O'Keeffe, Clinical Director of the Galway-Roscommon Hospital Group said there had been ongoing difficulties recruiting the required number of Choose (junior doctors) required to safely deliver a safe 24-hour emergency service in Roscommon. In the recent past we have been managing this issue through the use of locum doctors. That is not a sustainable or safe solution in the long term.
• Dr. O'Keeffe's remarks came following Minister Reilly's reported statement that "the mortality rate for a cardiac patient was four times greater in Roscommon than at the closest major specialist centre in Galway"

Boyle GAA Club - Update 3rd November
There will be a very special charity game in the Abbey Park on Saturday at 3pm to pay tribute to Cian Smith who is retiring prematurely from playing due to health reasons. Cian has given exceptional service to the Club as a player from under 8 to the present day. He holds county title medals in almost every age category and his most treasured possession is his All Ireland medal which he won with Roscommon Minors in 2006. A Boyle selection managed by David Casey will take on a selection managed by Fergal O’Donnell which will comprise mostly of Cian’s Roscommon colleagues of 2006 as well as other well known players. The proceeds from the game will go towards the Mayo-Roscommon Hospice and the Kyle Casey Fund. Kyle is son of former Roscommon and Ballinameen player Sean Casey, who is receiving medical treatment at present. Admission is optional and it is hoped that there will be a large turnout.

Lough Key Triathlon Club - Run In The Dark

The club is delighted to be involved with the Run in the Dark event again this year and are planning the run in the scenic surroundings of Lough Key Forest Park on Wednesday November 12th. This is an international charity event which takes place all over the world on the same day in aid of spinal injury research. It was a very successful event last year with a 5k loop around the beautiful trails in the park.
Route details [here...]
The start and finish will be located at the entrance to the Lough Key Activity Centre. Both 5k and 10k loops will start at the same time so please aim to be there approx. 10-15 minutes before the start (8pm) so that we can get everyone organised. Just to remind you, there is no lighting in the park and it will be quite dark so anyone taking part must ensure to bring some form of lighting with them. The club does not take any responsibility for participants and you take part at your own risk.
Last year, it was a beautiful but cold winter's evening and all enjoyed a good hot cup of tea afterwards to take the chill off. We look forward to doing the same again this year.

Information about Boyle Bridge

Boyle River & Bridge

The bridge over the river Boyle in the centre of town has been the subject for countless photographs, postcards and featured in many publication. The bridge was damaged a few months ago. Restoration works are now underway.
Local historian Frank Geelan has supplied information about the history of the bridge.
In 1763, Sir Edward King had a statue of King William erected on the bridge of the time, possible a wooden structure. This statue was moved to a site on top of a stone plinth in what was know as the Town Park, and now named the Pleasure Grounds. The statue was moved before the rebuilding of Boyle Bridge in 1834.
