Monday 10th November: Two meetings were held in King House. It is important to note the both were heavily influenced by Roscommon Co Council, and we should thank Council Officials for their interest and involvement in a future for Boyle. Mick is heading home from the pub & decides to go ice fishing. He starts to make a circular cut in the ice. Suddenly…from the on high…a voice booms, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" Startled, Paddy moves further down the ice & begins to cut another fishing hole. The voice speaks once more: "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" Paddy stops, looks skyward, and says, " Is that you LORD?"
The voice replies, "No, this is the the Ice-Arena Manager!" |
'The Rockingham Projects'
pic © sean Rafferty
Sean Rafferty, grandson of the late Pat Flanagan has created a great new website, a resource for information about aspects of the past in our area.'The Rockingham Project' is a documentation of the projects carried out by Sean Rafferty relating to the site of the former Rockingham Demesne. The website is in the early stages of its development, but will continue to grow over time as further projects are carried out. It is intended that the website can eventually be both a reference point and repository for locals and outsiders; a place to view and contribute documents, articles, videos and other ephemera relating to the multi-layered cultural, social and historical landscape of Rockingham.

Did you know?
Roscommon A&E was axed in July 2011. At the time the following was reported:• Dr David O'Keeffe, Clinical Director of the Galway-Roscommon Hospital Group said there had been ongoing difficulties recruiting the required number of Choose (junior doctors) required to safely deliver a safe 24-hour emergency service in Roscommon. In the recent past we have been managing this issue through the use of locum doctors. That is not a sustainable or safe solution in the long term.
• Dr. O'Keeffe's remarks came following Minister Reilly's reported statement that "the mortality rate for a cardiac patient was four times greater in Roscommon than at the closest major specialist centre in Galway"

The start and finish will be located at the entrance to the Lough Key Activity Centre. Both 5k and 10k loops will start at the same time so please aim to be there approx. 10-15 minutes before the start (8pm) so that we can get everyone organised. Information about Boyle Bridge
The bridge over the river Boyle in the centre of town has been the subject for countless photographs, postcards and featured in many publication. The bridge was damaged a few months ago. Restoration works are now underway.
Local historian Frank Geelan has supplied information about the history of the bridge.
In 1763, Sir Edward King had a statue of King William erected on the bridge of the time, possible a wooden structure. This statue was moved to a site on top of a stone plinth in what was know as the Town Park, and now named the Pleasure Grounds. The statue was moved before the rebuilding of Boyle Bridge in 1834.
