Change the Future - Astonishing Fact - 12th March

The average Irish person emits 8.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually whereas the average Portuguese person uses only 5.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
• One of the simplest ways to reduce your carbon footprint is one of the most obvious. Turning off the lights when you leave the room is a surprisingly easy and effective way to reduce your carbon footprint

St. Patrick's Day Window Displays

One of the things I love about Boyle at this time of year are the shop window displays for St. Patrick's Day. I will be around town taking photos over the next few days and hope to publish photos of YOUR shop window. The St. Patrick's Day committee have appointed and outside, independent judge to award €100 and a perpetual cup for the 'best window display'.

Bishop Kevin Doran

Shannonside FM report: Bishop of Elphin Kevin Doran appears to have realised that he "stepped over the mark" in his comments this week regarding homosexuality, and whether or not gay people who have children can be classified as parents. That’s according to Patsy McGarry, Religious Affairs Correspondent with the Irish Times, who says the hastily arranged press conference in Maynooth yesterday, and the clarification from Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and Catholic Primate Eamon Martin on Bishop Doran’s comments was a public humiliation of sorts, for Dr Kevin Doran.

St. Patrick's Day Parade update

ENTRY FORMS FOR FLOATS: Entry is free to this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade Tuesday 17th March at 3pm. Entry forms are available at Una Bhan Tourism, Creightons Bar, Clarke's Bar and Wynne's Bar. If it is possible for you to complete and return to any of the above in advance of the Parade by Monday 16th, 5pm, we’d greatly appreciate it as it allows the line-up of Floats to be organised in advance.
• To ensure the success of continued parades in Boyle, we appeal to anyone who would like to make a contribution to the running costs, they can do so at any of the above premises, where you’ll be receipted.
• With rising costs annually, it is only through the generosity of the people of Boyle that our Parades have been so successful. We thank all who have already donated to this year’s Parade and look forward to any additional contributions.

On the 20th March 1865 at the age of 24 William Mervin Lawrence opened a Photographic Studio opposite the G.P.O. at Sackville street Dublin. Over the years the studio successfully photographed the length and breadth of Ireland from Howth Head in the East to Achill Head in the West and from Malin Head in the North to Skibbereen the South). The collection consists of 40,000 glass plates mainly from the period 1880-1914, but some plates go back to 1870.
