The Join Our Boys Trust was set up just over two
months ago to support the Naughton family from Roscommon
whose three boys were diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). A diagnosis of DMD is devastating. It is a
100% fatal, neuromuscular disease where life expectancy is late teens or early
twenties. As the disease
progresses, muscle tissue will experience wasting and will eventually be
replaced by fat and fibrotic tissue. This will lead to extreme difficulties in
walking and will eventually lead sufferers to being wheelchair dependant
between the ages of eight and twelve. At present, there is no treatment and no
cure.
The immediate purpose
of the fundraising is to provide a purpose-built house for the family’s use.
Indeed, one of the principles of the Trust is that all the money raised and the
proposed house will remain in the ownership of the Trust but will be for the
family’s use.
The Trust hope to raise
1.2 million and spread awareness about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and
ultimately try to find a cure.
The people of County
Roscommon and beyond are showing tremendous support for the family and the Trust.
Many fundraising events have already taken place and plenty more are being
planned. A monster draw, where the first prize is a car, has been launched and
this is promising to be an outstanding success.
A Variety Concert featuring an array of local
artists will be held in St. Joseph’s Hall, Boyle on Saturday the 7th
June at 8.30 p.m. in support of the Join our Boys Trust. Your support for this fundraiser would be
greatly appreciated. For further
