Town Plan & Town Revitalisation meetings

PB100017

Monday 10th November: Two meetings were held in King House. It is important to note the both were heavily influenced by Roscommon Co Council, and we should thank Council Officials for their interest and involvement in a future for Boyle. It was also noteworthy that in addition to interested locals, a number of politicians were present, for these are the people who will be able to vote in favour of changes on our behalf
6.30-8pm: Boyle Town Plan. The audience were divided into discussion groups, each chaired by a council official. 16 headers questions were answered by each group that will be collated and a list of recommendations offered in the formulation of a current Town Plan
8pm-10.30pm: Town Revitalisation. Acting County Manager Tommy Ryan introduced a presentation by Retail Design Specialist Ann Marie O’Connell, who gave a detailed audio-visual presentation on the Revitalisation programme.
"We want our community to have a town to be proud of. We aim to support the creation of jobs, facilitate start-up business and above all re-instill the pride we all should have for "Our Town". Effective change will come from within."

Startled, Paddy moves further down the ice & begins to cut another fishing hole. The voice speaks once more: "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" The voice replies, "No, this is the the Ice-Arena Manager!"

'The Rockingham Projects'

pic © sean Rafferty

Sean Rafferty, grandson of the late Pat Flanagan has created a great new website, a resource for information about aspects of the past in our area.
'The Rockingham Project' is a documentation of the projects carried out by Sean Rafferty relating to the site of the former Rockingham Demesne. The website is in the early stages of its development, but will continue to grow over time as further projects are carried out. It is intended that the website can eventually be both a reference point and repository for locals and outsiders; a place to view and contribute documents, articles, videos and other ephemera relating to the multi-layered cultural, social and historical landscape of Rockingham.

Did you know?

Roscommon A&E was axed in July 2011. At the time the following was reported:
• Dr David O'Keeffe, Clinical Director of the Galway-Roscommon Hospital Group said there had been ongoing difficulties recruiting the required number of Choose (junior doctors) required to safely deliver a safe 24-hour emergency service in Roscommon. In the recent past we have been managing this issue through the use of locum doctors. That is not a sustainable or safe solution in the long term.
• Dr. O'Keeffe's remarks came following Minister Reilly's reported statement that "the mortality rate for a cardiac patient was four times greater in Roscommon than at the closest major specialist centre in Galway"

Boyle GAA Club - Update 3rd November
There will be a very special charity game in the Abbey Park on Saturday at 3pm to pay tribute to Cian Smith who is retiring prematurely from playing due to health reasons. Cian has given exceptional service to the Club as a player from under 8 to the present day. He holds county title medals in almost every age category and his most treasured possession is his All Ireland medal which he won with Roscommon Minors in 2006. A Boyle selection managed by David Casey will take on a selection managed by Fergal O’Donnell which will comprise mostly of Cian’s Roscommon colleagues of 2006 as well as other well known players. The proceeds from the game will go towards the Mayo-Roscommon Hospice and the Kyle Casey Fund. Kyle is son of former Roscommon and Ballinameen player Sean Casey, who is receiving medical treatment at present. Admission is optional and it is hoped that there will be a large turnout.

Lough Key Triathlon Club - Run In The Dark

The club is delighted to be involved with the Run in the Dark event again this year and are planning the run in the scenic surroundings of Lough Key Forest Park on Wednesday November 12th. This is an international charity event which takes place all over the world on the same day in aid of spinal injury research. It was a very successful event last year with a 5k loop around the beautiful trails in the park.
Route details [here...]
The start and finish will be located at the entrance to the Lough Key Activity Centre. Both 5k and 10k loops will start at the same time so please aim to be there approx. 10-15 minutes before the start (8pm) so that we can get everyone organised. Just to remind you, there is no lighting in the park and it will be quite dark so anyone taking part must ensure to bring some form of lighting with them. The club does not take any responsibility for participants and you take part at your own risk.
Last year, it was a beautiful but cold winter's evening and all enjoyed a good hot cup of tea afterwards to take the chill off. We look forward to doing the same again this year.

Information about Boyle Bridge

Boyle River & Bridge

The bridge over the river Boyle in the centre of town has been the subject for countless photographs, postcards and featured in many publication. The bridge was damaged a few months ago. Restoration works are now underway.
Local historian Frank Geelan has supplied information about the history of the bridge.
In 1763, Sir Edward King had a statue of King William erected on the bridge of the time, possible a wooden structure. This statue was moved to a site on top of a stone plinth in what was know as the Town Park, and now named the Pleasure Grounds. The statue was moved before the rebuilding of Boyle Bridge in 1834.
