Friday 18th September marks Culture Night 2015 and King House in Boyle will once again be participating in the national celebration. On Culture Night, arts, heritage and cultural organisations open their doors until late with hundreds of free events, tours, talks & performances for you, your family and friends to enjoy.
This year, King House welcomes one of Ireland's leading international female concert pianists, Thérèse Fahy, for the event, when she will play an exciting mixture of old and new piano masterpieces at King House and there will also be an opportunity for visitors to explore Maria McKinney’s new exhibition, which runs throughout the house.
Highlight’s of Thérèse’s performance, include the performance of a piece by Roscommon-based composer, Siobhán Cleary, written to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of WB Yeats. The concert will also feature a piano piece composed by Riverdance composer, Bill Whelan, written especially for Thérèse Fahy. Dublin-born Thérèse enjoys an active performing career at home and abroad, her regular recital and concerto appearances throughout Europe and the United States have met with critical acclaim, as have her numerous broadcasts for both RTÉ and BBC.
“The Turn” by Maria McKinney is a new visual art exhibition, running parallel with exhibited works from the Boyle Civic Art Collection. Maria McKinney has been commissioned to produce a number of small works that have been placed within the existing exhibits throughout the museum along with a more traditional display of her in the Long Gallery. Maria’s work considers the complexities that structure our everyday environment. Selecting things that already exist in the world for purposes of distraction, consumption or insulation, she configures a process of manipulation in response to their form and habitual purpose.
The current exhibition of works from the Civic Art Collection “Contexts:02” presents works that connect to the thematic contexts in Maria McKinney’s work. Specifically selected to pick up on textural, compositional and conceptual similarities, the artists in this exhibition represent merely a slice of this vast collection.
The house will be open until 9.30pm on Culture Night, with Thérèse’s performance commencing at 8pm. Pre-booking advisable on 071 766 3242
